| Ive got no secrets with my motors... I'll describe the only ones worth a crap, meaning not stock. Stepside's 454 is a GM Goodwrench 4-bolt main block I kept out of an '84 Suburban that I ran until it seized. Took that block and a forged steel crank that was standard out of 1 of 3 motors I had (they got all mixed up in the parts, so the crank either came out of a $250 '73 camper Special 2wd, a $600 1973 25ft Open Road motorhomeor a $700 1978 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4. They were all standard forged cranks and standard bore 2-bolt blocks. Traded the 3 2-bolt blocks in towards the machine work and assembly of the 4-bolt motor. Parts the 3 rigs the motors came from and got all my money back plus profit. Crank was polished and remained standard, and was balanced with a set of stock truck rods. Took a used set of domed hypereutectic .040 over pistons from Travis's old Blazer motor. Also used the Comp 270HR cam with .566/.566 lift that was in that blazers 454, and used the matching valve springs, pushrods and lifters and roller rockers. Took a pair of 771 casting 366 tall deck industrial heads, which had tiny valves and strangely were on a 1974 Pacesetter 24ft motorhome 454 motor when I got them. They are about 101cc or so, a semi closed chamber head. Had 2.19 and 1.88 valves put in. Coughed up $300 to have the heads ported and polished by someone who knows what they're doing. $200 of that money was raised by selling a 15ft camp trailer that I got for free 10 blocks from my house. Then added an $80 (I think) used gear drive I bought, and the Holley dual plane aluminum intake off a 396 I had. And matching Holley valve covers I got years ago in a trade. A deeper truck version oil pan off another motor. And a mystery Holley thats probably 750+cfm. It was machined balanced and completely assembled by Jeff Cassell (Cassell Engines) who worked with me on trade ins and stuff. Somehow in it all, the motor final cash figure came to just under $900 invested, unless I deduct the $200 I got from that free trailer I sold, then it would be under $700. Only "new" parts in it at the time were gaskets, rings and bearings and oil pump. I even put new oil in it. But used some old used autolite spark plugs out of a seized TBI 350, used plug wires and stock HEI with a good used cap and rotor, timed it by ear and off I've gone since. Here's the ones that created the Stepsides one motor and here it is done with all the best parts of each The blue/white GMC has a 2-bolt main 454 block (the original 454 block I got for that truck in 1997 and never used until 2007). Bored .060 over with used hypereutectic flattops I had on a shelf, stock truck rods, a forged steel crank that's turned 0.10/.010, balanced rotating assembly, 702 casting closed chamber heads 98cc with stock size valves. No porting done. A used cam I bought for like $35 or something, an SSI cam like .544/.544 lift or about that if I'm remembering right. Weiand action plus dual plane intake I kept off another motor. A used gear drive. Roller rockers I ended up with for free. New rings, bearings, oil pump, assembled again by Jeff Cassell. Edelbrock 750 carb. The Truck Blazer has at least a 454, but was told it's a 496. Whatever it is, it's a cast crank in it, and the heads are 101cc semi closed chamber, has a good sized cam, Edelbrock rpm air gap intake and Holley 750 carb. I swapped the Erson gear drive out of my 396 into it and thats as deep as I've seen it inside. Besides running the heads casting numbers. The Blue parts Jimmy has open chamber oval port 1972 402 heads a Comp Xtreme 4x4 270/278 cam .544/.564 valve lift, roller rockers and some expensive looking pushrods, an Edelbrock performer rpm intake and currently a 750 Edelbrock. And a gear drive. And a moroso oil pan. The 488 for the Big Crew cab as of now planned has a forged aftermarket new crank for a 496, but will only be a 488 since we got some used .030 over 13:1 compression forged domed pistons for $100. So the 4-bolt block I got will be .030 over. Have a pair of ported/polished 781 casting open chamber oval port heads that will get 2.25/1.88 valves, and will run the Lunati .722/.722 solid roller cam I got for basically free, Holley Strip Dominator single plane intake I got at the Portland Swap Meet last year, some steel roller rockers, gear drive, and a few other parts not yet established. Camo Blazer's new motor thats not in yet is a standard bore 2-bolt main 454 with a factory forged steel crank that came in another 1973 Open Road 25ft Motorhome that I paid $700 for. It was supposedly a fresh rebuild. But the valves were sticking so bad 2 pushrods bent. But it had a pair of 702 heads 98cc chamber. Took those off, and wanted lower compression so stayed with some 101cc semi closed chamber heads, with the same flattop pistons in it, Had Jeff polish the crank and do new rings bearing and oil pump. Used an Edelbrock performer intake and a used Comp Xtreme 4x4 262/270 cam .505/.515 lift. It was orange from the motorhome rebuild, so got freshened up orange. Had to get toned down a bit for the Camo Blazer. Give me another 3-5 years and Ill have enough accumulated from this pile I started to do another used parts motor. Have these forged pistons, a .685/.685 lift solid roller cam, one of the other standard forged steel cranks and a 2-bolt block with 4-bolt main caps... etc... Just don't let me dive into motor internals... My nice SB 400 that I put in my Blue Blazer... ran hard for almost a year... Then.... | |

| well oddly enough a 305 will work but it depends on what it goes in if you wanna race make it light, a 305 in a yota is fun but in modified class or what ever you call it in a full size you really need some tire speed to clean the mud off and a 305 might not do it me personally i have a 454 in an s-10 and it isn't enough at ths point but i can go farther and tune more and get lower gears i seems like every time i build a truck it does great but it needs more so i am taking a new approach i want to build a smalblock powered "thing" and the only restriction for me is getting it under 1800 lbs | |

| Thank you for the info about the 305, I think I'll stick with the 350 for my full size and go with the 305 in my VW bug project. | |
